The Cost of Change, Part II

My Beloved Continues:

Today, let’s start with our hearts. In Proverbs, Solomon is instructing his sons/daughters to keep or guard their heart. What is in our hearts? Is it worth guarding and protecting? David said in Psalm 139:23-24 ESV:

“Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!”

If we look into our hearts, do we stand in the integrity of that request to the Lord?

If not, we need to shift our heart posture so it lines up to the purity and integrity of the scriptures. The author of Psalm 119 (often attributed to David) said in v 11-16:

“I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Blessed are you, O Lord; teach me your statutes! With my lips I declare all the rules of your mouth. In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches. I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.”

To get the Word in our hearts we must first immerse our entire self – in our mouth (lips), in our emotions (delights), in our minds (meditate and not forget), and our senses (eyes). Cultivating and then guarding our heart is the core foundation of seeing the change needed in our lives.

Next time, we will explore the remainder of our foundation scriptures Proverbs 4:24-27 –

“Put away from you crooked speech, and put devious talk far from you. Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure. Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.”

The heart is at the core, and from there flows everything pertaining our lives – our thoughts which lead to our words. These together lead to our actions, the actions form our habits. Our habits build into our character. Our character is what allows us to walk in our destiny. If we don’t like the reality and the trajectory of our current situation, we have to take stock and be willing to put in the work to change our hearts. This is just the beginning. We will dive deeper into this and start walking out the next phase of our lives.
